Children grow up so fast. Before you know it, they will be all grown leaving the nest for good. When children are off to college, it is common for parents and children to experience separation anxiety. In this post, I have highlighted a couple of methods that can help you and your child go through separation anxiety.

First of all, understand that separation anxiety really is a thing, and it can lead to substantial stress. There are a various ways to recognize the kind of stress children are going through before leaving for the school. Most children feel separation anxiety because they feel like their lives depend on their caregiver and without them they feel helpless. It takes time for kids to understand the concept of being on their own.

Most kids react to the separation as soon as they enter the new class and observe new faces, while other kids take their time to analyze the situation. If all seems good to them (if they think they can blend in well) they stay without making a noise. School playground equipment and other play items at school are sometimes not enough to keep the kids engaged. Most kids immediately realize that their parent or caregiver is gone, which makes them feel unaided among a lot of new faces.

How to deal with Separation Anxiety?

Try the following things to eradicate the anxiety that may follow the first day of school:

  • Let kids have some time on their own in the commercial playground.
  • Give kids a little freedom in their decisions.
  • Allow kids to go on play dates and make sure that they get to have some time on their with other kids.

Teach kids about the importance of independence at an early age, so they don’t have a hard time to adapt to the new setting.
